More suggestions from last week’s article on “Refire! Don’t Retire… Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life” by Ken Blanchard and Morton Shaevitz.
The Second Key: Refiring Intellectually
Mental Stimulation and Challenge: Take a course you have always wanted to take; become tech savvy on all the different gadgets; add to your intellectual journey, which may include mentoring the other generations, and individuals in your field; taking classes in the arts is also another way.
Currently, my mother at 98, is taking an art class in multi-media and is teaching a watercolor class to friends from our local Shepherd Center / Adult Education group.
Refiring Intellectually:
- Be open to learn… Look for learning in every situation
- Be a reader … Constantly search for new information
- Be teachable… Let others mentor you
- Be courageous … Venture into new areas
- Be persistent … Stay with it even when it’s difficult
Questions to “Pause, Reflex, Take Action”
- What can you do to make your present life more interesting and challenging?
- What new technology might you embrace, and who can help you learn it?
- Make a list of the things that used to excite you – for example, acting, photography, poetry, writing.
- How can you bring these passions back into your life?
The Third Key: Refiring Physically
A Moment Of Truth: Has a life changing event happened recently? Do you need to physically clean up your act? Make sure with your doctor that you are able to do certain physical activity then ask yourself these questions.
Questions to “Pause, Reflex, Take Action”:
- Identify at least one way you can eat more healthfully.
- What’s the first step you can take to becoming more physically active?
- Set a modest goal, such as loosing five pounds or walking a mile a day. Set a date and start today!
Dealing with Setbacks: Have you had any physical setbacks?
Recently, I broke my knee cap. I was at the peak of health and in 3 seconds I had fallen hard on a hardwood floor, with all my weight bearing on my right knee. The attending doctor at Urgent Care said it looked like an EKG with jagged broken edges of knee cap bone. After surgery, I had to deal with this setback and go forward.
Refiring Physically:
- Be healthy … Honor and strength your body
- Be an exerciser… Move your body
- Stay Flexible … Stretch everyday
- Learn Balance … Practice standing on one foot
Next week I will go into how to Refire Spiritually.
